Frequently Asked Questions

Learn about the strict entry rules, age limits, and the swim to the Hidden Beach.

How do you get to the Hidden Beach in Mexico?

You must book an authorized boat tour departing from Marina Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta, or Punta Mita. Once at the islands, you must swim 80 meters through a natural sea tunnel to enter the crater. Read Getting to Hidden Beach for logistics.

Can anyone swim to the Hidden Beach?

No. You must be a strong enough swimmer to handle 80-100 meters in open water with currents. Life jackets and helmets are mandatory.

Are there age limits for the Marietas Islands tour?

Yes, specifically for Hidden Beach. Most operators require a minimum age of 10-12 years old and a maximum age of 60-65 for the cave swim. Eco-tours skipping the cave have looser age limits. See Kids Tour Guide.

Is the Hidden Beach open every day?

No. The entire National Park is closed on Mondays. Hidden Beach is closed on both Mondays and Tuesdays for conservation efforts.

Why is the Hidden Beach closed on Mondays and Tuesdays?

CONANP closes the park and the beach on these days to allow the local marine ecosystem and coral reefs to rest and recover from human activity.

Is it safe to swim to Playa del Amor?

It is safe for capable swimmers following guide instructions. The mandatory helmet protects against the rocky cave ceiling, and the life jacket assists with buoyancy.

How long is the boat ride to Marietas Islands?

It depends on your departure point. From Punta Mita, the boat ride takes 15 to 35 minutes. From Puerto Vallarta, expect the ride to take 1 to 1.5 hours each way.

Can you see whales at Islas Marietas?

Yes. Humpback whales can often be spotted on the boat ride to the islands between December and March.

Are drones allowed at Marietas Islands?

No. Drones are completely banned in the National Park to protect the flight paths of endemic birds, including the blue-footed boobies.

Do you need a reservation for Islas Marietas?

Yes. Hidden Beach limits access to just 116 people per day. You must book a tour with an authorized operator well in advance. Check your options on our Tickets page.
